Former secretary of state John Prescott who has died aged 86 ‘revived British cities and led the refurbishment of thousands of council homes', the current postholder Angela Rayner has said.

Writing for a national newspaper, Rayner, who many have compared to Prescott, said the ‘one-off' Labour giant had ‘used the power of his office to deliver practical change' and been an ‘inspiration to me'.
