Get ready for the next crisis

During the pandemic, local government stepped up to the plate despite initial scepticism from Whitehall. It will need to again in the next crisis, which could erupt over the coming winter, says Michael Burton.

If there is one thing the pundits agree on it is that next winter is going to be financially extremely tough for a good percentage of the population.

No matter how often supporters of Liz Truss maintain that all this doom-laded talk is becoming self-fulfilling and that we should stop ‘talking Britain down', all the indicators insist there will be real hardship.
