Local Authority Registered Providers (LARPs) are facing seismic changes to their regulation, requiring them to refocus their efforts on tenants and the new requirements set by the Regulator of Social Housing (RSH). Whilst many are under pressure and unprepared, doing nothing would simply store up worse problems further down the road.
The new consumer standards and Code of Practice, introduced on 1st April, represent a new pro-active approach to regulation in the sector which will impact all public and private sector registered providers (RPs). Under the new regulatory regime, social landlords will be fully accountable to the RSH which now has new powers to carry out inspections and take emergency remedial action where necessary.
