There's real value in our arts

Council support for arts and culture is at serious risk amid the latest funding crisis. But we must find a way to sustain the arts as a remedy to our deepest challenges, says Alison Mckenzie-Folan.

What is the value of art and culture to our places? In the pressurised atmosphere of a local government sector in crisis the financial bottom line is dictating the answer to this question. The outcomes are threatening to be nothing short of a tragedy.

We are all aware of the impossible positions local government leaders are in. Statutory services are prioritised to avoid section 114s, those already under Government scrutiny are making cuts to cultural institutions which are the bedrock of civic life.
