This is my least favourite time of the political cycle, namely the election campaign.

It's when politicians either make grandiose and unfunded commitments such as the two main party leaders did last week when they pledged not to increase taxes, or they make no commitment at all such as declining to say how they intend cutting welfare by £12bn or balancing the books by 2020.
