The recession continues to stalk the polling booths

Michael Burton says the main political parties are still blamed by an unforgiving electorate.

One conclusion from all last week's commentary on the local and European elections is that there is no single conclusion but a hundred reasons as to why a substantial minority of voters are alienated by the political establishment.

How is one to make sense say of the flagship, council tax-cutting Tory borough of Hammersmith & Fulham LBC going Labour on the one hand and UKIP winning ten seats from Labour at Rotherham MBC on the other?
