Charities have called on councils to recognise the key role the voluntary sector can play in helping people through the recession.

The National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) welcomed last week's news that communities minister, Andrew Stunell, had written to every council leader in the country, reminding them there was ‘no excuse for abandoning the voluntary and community sector'.
