Record numbers face tax difficulties

More and more people are facing bankruptcy or debt because of paying council tax, according to new figures released this week.

The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountacy (CIPFA) revealed the number of insolvency cases initiated by councils in England and Wales had risen from 1,094 in 2000-01, to almost 6,000 in 2004-05.
