Referendum declared invalid

A bid for an elected mayor for Guildford has failed, after 31% of the signatures on a referendum petition were declared invalid.

The petition, handed into Guildford BC in parts over the past few months, had 7,067 signatures, but council officers could only verify 2,284 as being on the electoral register.
