Making the relationship work

Dean Wetteland, managing director of England's biggest local authority trading company Norse Group, advises on the steps councils thinking of entering the commercial world should consider.

According to a Grant Thornton report last year, there are now more than 740 local authority trading companies across the UK, and with councils always needing to do more with less, the continuing interest in trading services is no surprise.

The understandable political need to ensure every last penny of public money is well spent has led to a multi-billion pound market in the UK for facilities management alone.
