Local government will be given a louder voice in Whitehall as three new engagement forums meet for the first time this week.

An initial meeting of the quarterly Council of Leaders of local government took place on Tuesday before an inaugural quarterly Council of Mayors is due to meet this lunchtime in Newcastle ahead of the bi-annual Council of Nations and Regions.
