'We cannot keep relying on one-off emergency funding'

Those of us who rely on social care, care for family members who do, or will need care and support in the future, need three things from the new Government, says ADASS president Julie Ogley.

All of us, whether or not we are disabled, older, or caring for a family member who is older or disabled, have the right to feel safe and to live the lives we want to lead. Good care and support transforms lives. It enhances health and wellbeing, increases independence, choice and control. It is distinctive, valued, personal.

However, as our autumn survey has demonstrated, this isn't always happening. 93% of directors surveyed indicated that they have some concerns or insufficient capacity to manage the potential failure of a large provider. Additionally, 90% of directors have stated that they have either some concerns or insufficient capacity to manage during the winter months. Perhaps most worryingly councils across England are struggling to meet their statutory duties amid continued underfunding.
