Reorganisation adds to the patchwork quilt

Heather Jameson examines the Government's 'behind closed doors' stance on local government reorganisation.

Despite a constant government narrative of no top-down enforced local government unitarisation it appears the story behind closed doors is not quite so clear-cut.

Central government has been open about its push for directly elected mayors – it has dangled the carrot of devolution in exchange for its preferred option of accountability since the start. But now it seems moves are afoot to hold out the same carrot for unitary local government – but not everywhere.
