UK fire and rescue services were working closely with US colleagues on plans to tackle major emergencies in advance of Hurricane Sandy battering America's east coast this week.

Gloucestershire's chief fire officer Jon Hall, for example, recently travelled to North Carolina – where the storm hit the US coast on 29 October – to share best practice advice and provide a joint masterclass in urban search-and-rescue incidents.
