Reshuffle puts Gove in the driving seat for next election

Last week’s reshuffle was, for local government, far more than a switch in the ministerial deckchairs. What started out as change in secretary of state has ended up as a wholesale shift in the emphasis of the beefed-up, rebranded department.

Forget bickering over the relevance of dropping local government from the departmental name – no amount of changing the stationary will determine the relationship with the Government – this is a clear message of policy intent over structures.

In his reshuffle, Boris Johnson has shifted vast swathes of his General Election wishlist to Mr Gove – a man with a reputation for getting things done.
