No rest for the wicked

Paul Wheeler says there's no time for a break after the local elections when councils have to address serious issues that could transform voting in the future

Just when local government thought it could take a well-earned rest after the voting marathon of ‘Super Thursday', there are some worrying clouds on the horizon.

For, as the voting fiasco in Barnet proved, it is the conduct of elections as much as the elections themselves which is becoming an increasing cause of concern. There are two slow-burners which could fundamentally change the nature of elections in the UK.
