Local authority housing companies are becoming big business. Simon Martin and Steve Partridge examine the different approaches councils are taking and the risks and rewards of doing so.

It is not news that the UK's local authorities remain in the grip of a funding squeeze. Costs have been slashed and many services scaled back or closed. Yet it is not all doom and gloom – councils are exploring various new revenue sources to ensure they can replace lost income.

One idea rapidly growing in popularity is delivery through a local housing company (LHC).
