Rising welfare bills to squeeze wider government spending

A long-term rise in welfare, health and care bills will further squeeze spending on public order and safety and housing, according to the IFS.

A seemingly unstoppable upward long-term rise in welfare, health and care bills will further squeeze spending on public order and safety and housing, according to an Institute for Fiscal Studies report.

Entitled 'The changing composition of public spending'  it states how over the past 30 years the share of health and social welfare spending has dramatically increased, from one third of public expenditure in 1978/79 to half currently.
