Road toll areas could get council tax relief

Council tax bills could be slashed for communities hardest hit by road tolls. The Department for Transport (DfT) is considering a new report which suggests the cost of the road tolls could be offset by reductions in council tax bills in those areas most affected.

Ministers have promised the introduction of any national road-user charging to cut congestion would be revenue-neutral. And the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, the body for transport professionals, has suggested a number of solutions in its report Frustratingly slow: a report on road congestion and the Government's plan to deal with it. In particular, it states ‘the net revenues from congestion charging should mainly be re-cycled within the areas where they are raised, to help finance the local transport strategy as a whole'. ‘
