Local highway authorities given powers to classify roads in their areas and define their primary route network, without needing DfT approval.

Local highway authorities have been handed powers to classify roads in their areas and define their primary route network, without needing Department for Transport approval.

Announcing the move this week, Michael Dnes, head of roads classification at DfT, said: ‘We hope this move will give councils another tool to use is managing traffic in their area.'
