Rochdale MBC's head of children's services, Steve Garner, will effectively leave his post today, one week after MPs demanded to grill senior council officials in the aftermath of the child-grooming scandal.

Announcing his departure, Mr Garner, who had worked with Rochdale's children's services division for 11 years, the last three as service director, said he had 'decided to pursue new opportunities'.
