Council chiefs have hit back at ministerial claims the sector is sitting on a £21bn hoard of cash reserves – arguing the savings are keeping the sector from ‘financial collapse'.

The response followed a Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) press release, issued on the eve of a Commons vote on the local government finance settlement, which indicated some 114 councils and police authorities have signed up to take the freeze grant for 2015/16.
