Councils may have to rethink their approach to care home fees, following a landmark High Court ruling against Sefton MBC – and warnings about authorities' ‘appalling' moves to slash tariffs they pay to providers.

A High Court judge ruled last week that Sefton acted illegally when it arbitrarily froze payments to residential care homes for two years running.
