Safety in local communities

For London's boroughs, ensuring community safety remains high on the overall agenda, says John O'Brien.

How safe people feel in the place that they live and work has consistently ranked as one of the most important issues for residents since the 1980s. Not surprisingly, they look to their council to take a clear lead.

In London, the City's mayor has all of the powers and responsibilities of a police commissioner. He is able to appoint one of his deputies to take on this role to promote clear political accountability for policing in the capital.
