Salford City Council is to have a directly elected mayor after residents voted in favour of switching democractic structures yesterday.

Eleven cities are set to go to the polls on 3 May to decide if they want to move to the mayoral model, but Salford has beaten them to the vote in a referendum triggered by a petition.
