Saving cash, solving skills shortages

Councils have come under scrutiny for their reliance on costly agency social workers amid a chronic skills shortage. David Johnston explains how Buckinghamshire CC’s new Social Work Academy is helping to tackle the issue.

Let me get one thing straight: agency social workers are every bit as professional and caring as their permanent colleagues. This is important to state from the start, due to all the noise about how much agency staff cost.

Nevertheless, agency workers do cost us more money – an overhead of 30-40% on what we would normally pay for an employee.
