Those living the highlife in local government will no doubt be gearing themselves up for the glitz and glamour of tonight's Solace dinner. But it's not quite the Oscars.

Gone are the days when Solace's annual soiree used to be held at the Savoy, with little trinkets from the sponsors – the thought is enough to have the Taxpayers' Alliance clutching its pearls.
