Effective scrutiny at councils depends upon the chief executive recognising it as a legitimate function, the Communities and Local Government Committee heard yesterday.

Giving evidence to the committee on overview and scrutiny in local government, the chair of Croydon LBC's scrutiny committee said that while adequate resources are necessary, it is more important that scrutiny is taken seriously.
