A new season – but how long before the clouds return?

Public services are stretched so thin there is now an issue with spending the cash when it is available, including the extra £842m in the Household Support Fund. Heather Jameson asks: ' How did we get here?'

The clocks have changed, the sun is shining and spring is in the air. The entire public sector will breathe a sigh of relief that we have stumbled through a tough winter of surging energy costs and buckling health services.

But while the warmer weather may offer a marginal reprieve from crippling energy costs, the public is still in the grip of the cost of living crisis – and public services are feeling the pinch.
