Local government could be hit with a bill of up to £1.5bn after 60 NHS trusts suggested they might claim backdated business rates relief.

It is understood that concerns in the sector were triggered when well-respected rating agent Daniel Kolinski informed up to 100 councils that some NHS trusts should be receiving mandatory business rate relief because of their status as charities, which under primary legislation can apply for up to 80% off their bills.
