A sage is a term commonly applied to individuals blessed with the uncommon ability to fully understand the past, present and the future.

We may never know whether Cabinet Office minister, Francis Maude, called on such powers of foresight when launching his recent public attack on top civil servants – whom he accused of frustrating ministerial wishes and government reforms.
