Shaping a city for the future

Emerging from tragic circumstances, Southend-on-Sea has achieved new city status on a platform of hard work, recovery, regeneration and investment. Andy Lewis celebrates the achievement.

City status was awarded to us in the most difficult and tragic of circumstances, following the killing of highly respected local MP, Sir David Amess – but we must grasp the opportunity to forge a positive future for our new city.

The early indications are good, with a first-rate response from our staff, councillors, stakeholders and the community – both to dealing with that tragedy, and to planning for a year of respectful celebration and community partnership that Sir David would be proud of.
