Salford’s Labour mayor suggests pooling of sector reserves after fears emerge over proposals to overhaul the local government funding system.

A northern mayor has suggested councils with excessive reserves should consider handing them over to other local authorities facing severe financial pressure.

Days after ministers launched efforts to inject fairness into the local government funding system, Salford City Council's Labour mayor Paul Dennett said councils should not be ‘benefiting off the back' of others ‘because they just so happen to be able to build up reserves'.
