Social workers need to defeat the argument that jailing public servants for failing to protect children is the right thing to do, the director of children's services unfairly dismissed in the wake of the Baby P scandal has said.

Sharon Shoesmith said government proposals to extend wilful neglect criminal charges to cover children's social care ‘matched the public and political mood' but argued they were wrong.
