While Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has called on government departments to find efficiencies in his Autumn Statement, short-term spending cuts can actually impede long-term savings, as Michael Burton reports.

The phrase ‘efficiency savings' when used in the context of balancing the public finances is deservedly met with scepticism. For too long it has been used by politicians to make the numbers add up even though the savings themselves prove to be illusory.
