Slicing districts could slow LGR for fast-track areas

Cutting across district boundaries to make new unitaries could create a backlog of legislation and boundary reviews that stymies the Government’s reorganisation timetable.

Local government minister Jim McMahon last week announced the six areas being taken forward on the devolution priority programme (DPP) and invited reorganisation proposals from the remaining two-tier areas.

Any proposals to split districts are likely to cause legal and logistical challenges – despite the Government's assertion in its invitation letter that ‘where there is a strong justification more complex boundary changes [than existing districts] will be considered'.
