Social care reforms ring alarm bells for council finances

Michael Burton says the Government's decision to rush through last-minute changes watering down the cap on social care costs for poorer householders rather than letting them be properly debated will cause long term damage politically and financially.

When it comes to social care reform the phrases ‘buyer beware' and ‘never look a gift horse in the mouth' come to mind.

After waiting years, even decades, for Government action to address this political hot potato the recent announcement of a cap was at least a step in the right direction. Unfortunately, it was a step too far for the Treasury.
