Cash handed to businesses during the pandemic will be a complete waste of money if the same firms are allowed to go to the wall due to soaring inflation, a council chief has said.

St Helens MBC chief executive Kath O'Dwyer warned councils were already starting to hear reports of businesses struggling to pay their rates in the face of rising energy costs and other pressures.
