Going south can be profitable

In recent weeks, chief secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander, called on cities to ‘step forward’ if there were taxes they wanted to ‘take control over’. While Treasury backing for city devolution is welcome it needs to go further, explain Cllr David Burbage and Cllr Gordon Keymer, who make the case for extending fiscal devolution to South East councils

Her Majesty's Treasury has often been regarded as a blocker of change, but in the case of devolution, perhaps this is starting to shift.

The chancellor was an instrumental force behind the Greater Manchester devolution deal. Now his number two, chief secretary Danny Alexander, is pitching for a future of greater devolution that involves business rates, stamp duty and possibly, other taxes, too.
