Brendan Cleere looks back on how Taunton Deane BC has prepared the ground for economic growth – and how local authorities can learn lessons for their approach

Central to Taunton Deane BC's ambitions is economic growth and this has been set out in its corporate business plan. It is important not only to guarantee the future local economy of the borough but also address pockets of deprivation and meet the health and housing needs of an ageing population.

Taunton is acknowledged as the ‘most significant growth hub' in Somerset and is anticipated to receive most of the area's growth in jobs and housing. The council's local plan anticipates 13,000 new homes and 9,500 jobs between 2011-2028.
