Spending pressures are lining up for the next Chancellor

Politicians should level with the public that spending pressures are to do with the vulnerable, the young, the dysfunctional, the old and the ill, writes Michael Burton.

Two items in the news this week highlight the immense pressures on public spending which are likely to worsen next year as the new government re-tightens the screws on austerity.

The first is the report from the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) into child protection and mental health services which says many vulnerable children, offspring of hopelessly dysfunctional parents with drug addiction and other problems, end up ignored by local authorities.
