Staff facing third year without pay increase

Council staff face third year's pay freeze despite recognition sector’s workforce has lowest average public sector earnings.

Council staff face the prospect of getting no pay rise for the third year in succession, despite employers recognising the sector's workforce has the lowest average earnings compared with other parts of the public sector.

The admission, from the LGA's head of workforce, Sarah Messenger, came ahead of imminent talks by town hall chiefs aimed at settling the National Joint Council (NJC) trade union side's 2012-2013 pay claim for the main local government workforce.
