Without a standards system with teeth there is little deterrent

The appointment of a new Government presents an opportunity to refocus and set higher expectations about how those in and around local and national government, operate, says Graeme McDonald.

A fish rots from the head, and as countless inquiries, research and interventions have demonstrated, the values and behaviour of leadership resonates throughout an organisation, impacting individual service transactions with citizens.

Earlier this year it was reported that 56 MPs were being investigated for various counts of misconduct, while nine politicians have either stood down or been suspended since Boris Johnson entered No10 Downing Street. MPs are, quite rightly, subject to a standards regime with a range of sanctions, including suspension of salary, suspension from Parliament and even expulsion.
