Stepping up to meet the retrofit challenge

The scale of the net-zero retrofit challenge cannot be overstated and needs a joined-up approach by local authorities and housing providers. But the opportunity ahead is truly transformative, says Stephen Fernandez.

With COP26 over, all eyes now fall onto governments, businesses and industries and how they will begin to action the many promising commitments that were made.

Those of us in the construction industry must now use this moment to focus our minds on our own journey to net-zero. For us, this is often pitched as a race to develop new solutions as quickly as possible – from low-carbon concrete to factory-made modular homes. But that is the easy part. The hard part will be adapting what we already have, including the UK's housing stock – one of the least energy-efficient in Europe.
