Will steps finally be taken to protect public servants?

As Westminster contemplates the tricky tightrope of balancing safety and democracy, free speech and abuse, the same debates must be held for local government, says Heather Jameson.

Five years ago, the murder of Batley and Spen MP Jo Cox came as a massive shock to the nation.

On that day in 2016, as we prepared to celebrate the achievements of local government at The MJ Awards, the murder of a public servant as she carried out her duty was a tragedy for those around her, and a brutal assault on democracy.
