Retail chiefs have called for the government to freeze local business rates next year, as shops continue to struggle with tough conditions.

Retail chiefs have called for the government to freeze local business rates next year, as shops continue to struggle with tough conditions on the UK's high streets.

In a letter sent to the Financial Times this week, senior retail figures - including the director-general of the British Retail Consortium (BRC) - calls for rates to be frozen in 2013 following ‘eye watering' rises in both 2011 and 2012.
