Structure shake-up back on the agenda

Local government restructuring is back on the agenda after three weeks of rows between the Treasury and Number 10 over whether savings would outweigh costs.

Local government minister, Phil Woolas, confirmed last week that restructuring in two-tier areas was ‘not off the agenda'. He added, in an interview with The MJ: ‘It has to be done on value-for-money grounds and the process must not be disruptive.'
