Stuttering Home Office needs to act for asylum children

The National Transfer Scheme for unaccompanied asylum-seeking children is clearly overwhlemed and with little sign of improvement, the system needs a rethink, writes Heather Jameson.

While the national media awaits the outcome of the legal battle surrounding the Government's controversial Rwanda policy, for local government there is a far more pertinent asylum seekers case in the courts: Kent CC's and the Home Office's wrangle over unaccompanied asylum-seeking children.

Ultimately, this is a problem no one wants to face: the Home Office is up against soaring asylum numbers and local authorities already face crippling financial pressures without taking on extra responsibilities. There are no easy answers – but these are children in need of vital support.
