Succession planning for a fast-changing future

Jody Goldsworthy urges councils to prepare for the future as leadership roles begin to change and local authorities set out to find the next generation.

The global financial crisis sent shockwaves through the private sector and triggered a period of change in local government that is ongoing. 

Many authorities are undertaking second or third round restructuring processes. The drivers of these consolidation exercises are largely financial, although other factors, such as rising citizen expectations and the need to innovate and digitise service delivery also play a part.
