One third of suspected suicides in Kent and Medway are impacted by domestic abuse. If that figure were to be replicated nationally – and I don't know of a good reason why it wouldn't be – it would mean more than 1,800 people are taking their own lives every year after being impacted by domestic abuse, either as victims or perpetrators.
When I first received that data from Kent Police, I wanted to know how we compared to the rest of the country. It turned out we were the only area to include specific questions about domestic abuse in our Real Time Suicide Surveillance System. So, no one else knew.
